You're probably right.  I was just thinking about Kerberos offering a
"one-time-log-in" facility.  Awhile back (and it's been a long while) I
worked at a place that used Kerberos so that we didn't have to authenticate
each time we wanted to access a new resource.  Has OpenLDAP + TLS solved
this yet?
