I jumped the gun on this. NIS is the answer.

Thank you,

Subject: Centralized login server for Linux network

Hello,

Could anyone point me to documentation covering how to build a dedicated
Linux login server. We want to have all Linux workstations authenticate to a
login server rather than the workstation itself. Preferable, we would like
not to have any users on the workstations. Not sure how to do this or if it
is possible.

Many thanks in advance.
