*** Postfix seems to be the "other" standard. I haven't come around to
acrtually using it as my sendmail setup works Ok and I got to understand it
by now. Another argument for sendmail is it being a defacto standard in the
*nix world. Any unice flavour has sendmail.

However, it's a pig, some admin's are fed up with its security issue's and
the sendmail.cf file has been compared in the past with modem noise... It's
old but still going strong.

It's the typical *nix issue: You have the alternatives, up to you to decide
which one you want...
