Welcome Norma

First of all - it's OK to be a bit daunted by Unix. Yes, there is a
huge amount to learn and it all seems interrelated - to understand A
you need to understand B, but to understand B you need to understand A!

However, alot of this is 'nomenclature' as you so rightly say. Life is
not made any easier by seeing these young sprouts whizz around in Linux
at such a diszzying speed!!!

As an ex-academic, my advice to you is to learn by doing. By all means
keep your DOS/Windows installation going and use that to do the things
that *have* to be done against a timeline. You need to know that when
all else fails you can go back to what you know and get a job done.

At the same time, when you have time to explore and learn, boot up into
Linux. Once you have done this a few times (and yes, trashed your Linux
system and re-installed it a few times) I think you will find there is
a logic behind the cryptic commands and terse error messages.

You may find that a visit to your computer bookshop and a judicious
investment in a few books will assist you. I personally recommend the
O'Reilly and associates books...
