Hi Robert,

for text only login, vi /etc/inittab   In this file look for the follwing 
line:

id:5:initdefault:

Change the 5 to a 3 and this will turn off the gui login on next boot up.  In 
the mean time you could, as root run the follwing command:

init 3

This will drop the run level you are in now (5 or gui) to 3 (standard login 
prompt.
