The file /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf is only present if Apache was installed via RPM. IF at some time in the future he installed from a tarball then he may well have a config file under some other location.
In fact if this is the case and he did a "find / -name httpd.conf" then the httpd.conf file under etc would show up before one in some other location. However you are right he may have edied the https doc root. Only time will tell....
