Going from most likely to least:

1. you edited the wrong httpd.conf file.
2. you edited the wrong httpd.conf file.
3. you never saved the changes.

see if you have a file /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf as well as somthing
like /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf

if you start apache /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start 

then edit the latter otherwise edit the former.
