Hi Charlie,

        The solution below is for Gnome users. I can't offer any help with a
KDE desktop because I don't have it installed and haven't used it in
over 3 years. That being said, I would assume that the same principle
applies. Check the various applets you can add to the panel and see if
there is something resembling the notification area. Perhaps another KDE
user on the list can help.
