Hi,
I have tried and tried, but I still can't seem to do this right. I have an
old 486/66 with 32mb ram, and I want to use it for a router/proxy for my
home network. I currently have 4 systems on the network, and I have
through a cable--modem access to 2 ip's for the 'net. All of the devices
are connected together via a 5 port hub. I want to change this so that the
486 is the only box connected to the modem, and through a 2nd NIC the same
486 is connected to the hub, and it provides the services of the internet
to the rest of the net. I have a very good understanding on setting that
portion up, but I can not get the 2nd NIC recognized by the 486 kernel.
The following is a list of the parts in the computer:
1 3c509 combo 3Com (ISA, set to irq=10, io=300)
1 3c900 combo 3Com (PCI, set to irq 12, on it's own)
Current driver loaded recognizes the 3c900 (this is the card connecting to
the local network)
When I try to add anothe eth module to the kernel, all looks well, until I
exit the config program, where it disappears, and I can not see it. I have
tried using ifconfig, and it does not see the card, nor does the network
config report any errors. What am I missing? I have installed linux with
BOTH cards in place.
TIA
Pete
