put the following lines in your .xinitrc/.xsession before you start your 
window manager.  Your path to xscreensaver may be different than mine.
Add -lock to the arg list if you want a password prompt.

#I perfer xscreensaver over a blank screen
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset s off
/usr/local/bin/xscreensaver -silent -install -cycle 5 -timeout 10 > /dev/null &
