If you power down the machine while there are dirty buffers, you might lose data to filesystem corruption. A journalling filesystem might help you, but you could still lose data to dirty buffers. There is also the issue of apps which need to save memory data to disk at shutdown. You are better off issuing the shutdown command to power down a machine. Cheers, -- Javier Gostling Av.
