Others have answered the various questions posted, so just a quick 
followup.
o You must be root for some of the needed operations. (rpm install and
   link creation.)

o The link can probabably go in either mozilla directory. I believe that 
at the time I installed the plugin, I only had a /usr/lib/mozilla/ 
directory. Since upgrading Mozilla, I have 2 directories. The previously 
installed plugins still work.

[mfratoni@paradox mfratoni]$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
libflashplayer.so  libjavaplugin_oji.so  plugger.so  rpnp.so
[mfratoni@paradox mfratoni]$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla-1.0.1/plugins/
libnullplugin.so

Plugins from both directories show up in Mozilla.
