You know, this may be one of the most important things we could talk
about once we move beyond "How come I can't telnet in as root?" type
questions.

The management issue here almost entirely economic. Show Senior
management significant value for their budget dollars/time (same
thing!) and you'll make a sale, almost everytime. I have, only
recently, begun to win some battles with RH.

Of course, as CEO I get to make decisions for my own outfit, and I've
chosen Hurricane for everything. I only use the M$ platforms for
compatibility's sake now. As CTO for another company I've had to
convince the President and even two of the directors (can you believe
that?) that Linux adds significant value to their network. I won those
battles and next week all of their DNS will be Hurricane and one of
these boxen will be a sendmail frontend for two M$ Exchange boxen.

This afternoon I got a call from one of those same directors who was
putting up roadblocks and she asked me if I planned on attending the
Linux Expo in May. Guess what I said and who's paying for it!?

The key has been educating them. I took them around Hall A at FOSSE in
Washington, DC last week. We went to the Applix booth where, I'd
venture, they learned a thing or two! Then we went by SCO's booth and
took a look at their Intel Unix (Unixware 7) and explained that RH in
particular was probably ahead of their development (particularly with
RPM) and that the LPD (last time I checked) was working on cert's for
Linux tech's/engineers. I walked them over to M$'s booth and asked
them how they'd have liked to be in on the initial groundswell with that
outfit. Then I just sat them down and explained what it meant to be
able to run Linus's kernel on an Intel platform. They've been around
the office and watched the wireheads swearing about another NT BSOD and
they've paid the bills for the heavy hardware required to run NT Server
with any kind of speed! For any company involved with integration,
Linux is mandatory. Those who snooze are guaranteed to lose!!!!
