Since I recompiled my kernel I've been noticing my hard disk is noisier than usual. Lots of abrupt clicks and thumps. I'm wondering if there's anyway to find out if the hard disk is issuing any errors to the kernel? Perhaps a log of such things? It seems to occur mostly when the swap file is being accessed...though it happens other times when large amounts of data are coming off the disk. The disk is new (bought it specifically for installing Linux)...and it ought to be pretty quiet (I installed the same drive model in a Win95 machine and it operates almost silently). Everything seems to be working ok, but the noise from this drive is beginning to concern me. I don't think it can be good for the drive to have the head banging around like that so much. Could it be caused by the fact that the drive is UIDE and the controller on the MB is only EIDE (and my Linux kernel doesn't support UIDE)?
