Hmmm...Therein lies the rub, it would seem. I tried running makewhatis
with no success. It responds, "bash: makewhatis: command not found".
And a quick glance through bin and sbin confirms that it is not present.

I'm actually beginning to see a pattern. Quite a lot of things that
were 'supposed to be installed automatically' have not actually been
installed. Such as the CD and floppy mount info in fstab and now this
(and several other things that I've managed to fix myself). Methinks
the install everything option doesn't actually install everything (and,
in fact, leaves out quite a lot of important stuff).

I'll go see if I can figure out what package on my CD this comes from.
Will I be able to just put the binary on my hard disk (wherever RPM
wants to put it, presumably bin) and have it run ok? Hopefully, this
cron job of which you speak was actually put in place...because I
haven't the foggiest notion of how or where to put such a thing.

Linux certainly is a humbling experience for a geek who thinks he knows
everything, such as myself.

Thanks again...
