Hi,

I run several multibooted systems with Linux and Partition Magic.
Provided some notes on how to set up Linux on a dual booted system running
Partition Magic & the boot manager, also. Don't know where they are now; they
were sent to Ed Bailey @ Red Hat.

     In any case, notes below.

No, the problem here, as others have pointed out, is that this partition isn't
unused space, it's formatted as a DOS partition. This is one of the problems
you need to fix.

Correct. See above note.

Personally, I find it easier to work in fdisk, myself. It's more cryptic, but
also more powerful and direct. Just hit the 'p' key after fdisk starts & look
at what's on your drive.

You're trying to install in a limited area and a single partition. This won't
work; you'll need at lease 2 and preferably 3 partitions to work in. My
suggestion would be to use Linux fdisk to remove hda3 and reconstitute it as 2
partitions: hda3 = 416M (Linux native) and hda4 = 32M (Linux Swap). Accept as
fact that, after you have enough experience to judge your needs, you'll
reinstall, change partitioning, etc.

With these two partitions created, complete your installation, using /dev/hda3
for "/", the root partition, and /dev/hda4 as swap space. When the install
program for linux asks you about installing LILO, install it to /dev/hda3, the
root partition, rather than on the MBR.

Reboot into DOS/Win95 & run Partition Magic. In boot manager, select
/dev/hda3 (will be highlighted as ext2 type) and mark it as a bootable
partition with a label such as "linux". Reboot & select that boot partition
from the boot manager menu. Presto, there you are.

If I can be of any help, feel free to email me.

Best!
