rpm -Ivh package.rpm   to install
rpm -Uvh package.rpm   to upgrade

Read the rpm-howto.

My suggestion would be to install a 'full' kernel and NOT use the ones
provided by redhat. Read the kernel-howto and the lilo-howto.
