Hi,

Thanks for the long awaited reply. But now I am posting
a CC of this message to the Redhat-list also so that others
can also try to solve the problem.

Here is what happens in detail.

1. Insert the RedHat Bootdisk into the floppy drive and
   start the system.

2. At the boot: prompt enter

        expert
   and press enter.

3. After sometime the white coloured screen appears
asking for whether I am using a color monitor.

4. At this point of time the System Log (Alt F4) shows the
   following messages.

Ramdisk driver initialezed : 16 ramdisks of 4096 size
    hda: TOSHIBA MK2720FC, 1296MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=658/64/63
    ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
    Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
    FDC 0 is a National Semiconductor PC87306
    md driver 0.35 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAX_REAL=8
    scsi : 0 hosts
    scsi : detected total.
    Partition check:
     hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 <hda5>
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
    VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)

5. I select Yes for the color monitor option on Install
   screen (Alt F1)

6. Welcome to Redhat Linux screen is displayed. Press Enter

7. Keyboard type selected is us

8. Do you need PCMCIA support?

9. No is selected and press Enter.

10. Installation method

      hard drive

hard drive option is selected and press Enter.

11. It asks for second floppy.

12. Put the Redhat Supplimentary floppy and press Enter.

13. System log (Alt F4) shows :

VFS: Disk change detected on device 02:00

14. The floppy is read and the Install screen (Alt F1) now
    shows the

"Installation Path" - Install or Upgrade screen

15. Install is selected and press Enter

16. "Do you have any SCSI adapters?" is displayed.

17. No selected and press Enter.

18. Disk Setup screen appears.

19. Disk Druid is selected and press Enter.

20. Current Disk Partitions screen is displayed.

    hda1 100M 100M Linux native
    hda2 17M 17M Linux Swap
    hda3 387M 387M DOS 16 bit >= 32
    hda5 789M 789M DOS 16-bit >= 32

Mount points are selected as follows :

   for hda1 : /
hda2 : (swap partition) does not allow editing mount point.
       hda3 : /dos_1
       hda5 : /dos_2

21. OK is selected in Disk Druid and press Enter.

22. No Swap Space - You don't have any swap space defined.
Would you like to continue, or repartition your disk?
     Repartition / Continue

    screen is displayed.

23. At this point Alt F4 shows :

attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1094, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1095, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1096, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1097, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1094, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1095, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1096, limit=4
attempt to access beyond end of device
   02:00: rw=0, want=1097, limit=4

24. Alt F3 shows :

    running : /usr/bin/fdisk /usr/bin/fdisk /tmp/hda
exec of /usr/bin/fdisk failed : Input output error.

25. Select Continue and press Enter in Install Screen (Alt F1)

26. Select Partition :- What partition and directory on that
partition hold the Redhat/RPMS and Redhat/base directories?

But here only the heading -

     Device Begin End Size (k)

gets displayed. Neither devices nor Begin/End etc are
displayed.

27. Select Cancel, press Enter

28. Cancelled screen is displayed.

29 Previous is selected and press enter

30. Goes back to No swap space defined screen

32. If Fdisk option is selected it hangs.

The Installation process seems to hang at this second stage.

Any solutions anybody?

Regards,
