The great thing about external modems is that you can get the serial
port IRQs etc working and debug that stuff without worrying about what
the modem is doing. Once you know your serial port is working, you
can then sort out the modem. It allows you to pinpoint a problem to
one thing or the other. Also, if a modem is external, it's much
easier to take it and test it on someone else's machine, or
temporarily borrow it, and so on. Lastly, if the modem is external I
think it can't be a WinModem.
