This is about C++ only.  C language programs ARE compatible.  Note that
in e.g. 7.x, there is libstdc++-compat libraries, I expect to find the
same on 8.x, so your C++ programs compiled on 7.x will run just fine on
8.x -- like 6.x vs 7.x.
