I've been running gcc 2.95 on RHL 6.x (and 5.0) for quite some time.

Broke nothing so far as I've noticed, and the compiler (and its results) have 
had lots of exercise.

My RHL 5.0 system has glibc 2.1 and the 2.0 compatibility libraries and 
nothing broke there either. It has a veritable hodge-podge of packages from RL 
5.x and 6.x on it.
