I agree.
I often download the most recent package and build it here for an earlier
release, sometimes as old as 4.2.
In the case of sendmail-11 it proved too difficult.
There are also packages that require egcs to build. I run gcc 2.95, so these
packages don't build until I fiddle with the spec. Presumably they won't build
easily on RHL 7 either.
