Did you test this with the latest (3.0.5-9, for example) RPM v3?
Certain older versions had oddbal problems with building, e.g. defaulting
to configure --sysconfdir=/usr/etc and stuff like that. It might have
caused certain problems ...
I haven't noticed any problems (not that I've rebuilt that many RPMs
yet) with -9.
