upgrading from RH6x to pinstripe or rawhide using rpm

>From an upgrade point of view the biggest obstacles to upgrading from
6.x seem to be rpm-4.0, glibc-2.2pre (and XF86-4.0).  How hard is it
to do the upgrade "by hand" ie using rpm?
