So you wre a "pure" computer guy from the start? I was referring to
classic engineers (ie the guys who build bridges and design TV sets)
who are asked were they graduated when applying for their first job be
it computer related or not. Graduation (in University) is another
word for certification. Of course certification (by software
manufacturers) is often a mockery but, with another name, it existed
in real world centuries before Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace
About self teaching: proof of competancy by doing is normal process
when a science is young and in fact there are no teachers because
everyone is a learner. After a time when the body of things to be
known increases and there are people who can teach it instead of
forcing every user to relearn how to make wheels then certifications
begin appearing.
