Supporting a resolution is one thing, getting a good refresh rate is
another and having adequate size still another. For instance my
display supports 1280x1024 but at this resolution refresh rate is only
60Hz while ophtalmologists say anything under 70 Hz causes visual
fatigue. Even if it supported 70Hz at 1280x1024 I would not be using
it as I have found 1024x768 is the most you can get on a 17" and still
get adequate size. Of course not all 17 inches are created equal and
some of them have crispier displays or larger usable diagonals so this
can allow to push the enveloppe a bit highr like 1152x864.
Another thing you have to consider is that X was designed having in
mind the 17 and 21" screens of workstations not the 14" usual in PCs
before 1995 so many apps are uncomfortable to use if you are using
800x600 or lower.
