You're treading on holy war territory on this. Unless something
drastic happens, this will *not* be changed.
All the boot messages should be in /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages.

Obviously, this would have to be fixed for serial boots, but
we could look at this.

The problem here is that the escapes aren't interpreted
the same way by the different *getty's. :(
