Expert didn't go far and crashed due to a catlog with wrong signature
before  I was able to use keyboard.

I tried CDROM install both text and GUI.  In text mode I don't get
french keyboard.  In GUI mode I get french keyboard in X but if I
switch to the shell console I notice the keyboard  is US outside X.

If you want to test it is easy: select french keyboard and hit 'A'.
If it displays A you are in US mode, if it displays 'Q' then it is
using french keys.
