Victory!!!
Now rxvt and xterm and every terminal program seems to work fine!

My old fstab had said:
   none /dev/pts  proc defaults

Now the only thing that puzzles me is why did terminals work fine for
awhile before they stopped working with my old /dev/pts entry the way it
was? I suppose it is possible that I had been using another (stock RH6.0)
fstab file prior to that point and that I deleted it by copying over my old
fstab prior to the RH 6.0 upgrade.

Anyway, thanks a million to Kevin and everyone who offered advice on this!
