Boy my heart sunk when I read that. So much for my theory...
But then a miracle happened:
I found another terminal program to try:
Eterm-0.8.9 works fine where all the others fail!!!!
Thanks also to Kevin Vajk for the detailed instruction on how I might get
xkbcomp working!
Anyway, it may be unimportant to me now that I finally have an X terminal
that works. I have reported to this as a bug to XFree86.org so maybe
somebody will eventually sort it out.
As for me, it's finally back to work after 2 months of downtime on this
machine <whew!>
