James,

The 80% DOD is just at the rare low insolation, LVD event.

I am spec’ing the Morningstar Genstar. I like that I can run the battery at 48V
(4 x 12V series).

This will be on a skid, out in the open, so no climate control.

Some Li batteries are now coming with “self-heating” feature which sounds good
on paper but would add another twist to the load calculation.

Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] LI Battery For Stand Alone?

80% DOD on an AGM battery is pretty aggressive and won't lead to very long
battery life. Is that your normal design intended depth of discharge or that
just where you the LVDs set to cut out?

You mention cold. And you are talking about 250 amp/hour and a genasun
controller. So a pretty small system. Unless you are planning on somehow
climate controlling the battery bank, I think for all practical purposes
lithium batteries aren't going to work because they generally aren't rated to
charge in the cold.

I always try to massively oversize my battery banks. The only complaint is the
cost. Limited charging rate has sulfating and other chronic undercharging
concerns. But I find that in (my) real world the customer is generally happy
that their loads stayed on and it tempers the cost of a battery replacement
down the road.

Folks,

I have spec’d the Morningstar Genstar for my stand alone power supply.

The application is in harsh desert environments so low and high temperatures.

I need very high reliability.

I am currently spec’ing 250 AH of AGM at 48V, with 80% allowed DOD.

Before I pull the trigger on this, I am wondering if LiPo has come far enough
in terms of simplicity and reliability.

Are folks now using LiPo successfully in this type of application?

If so, which products?

Thanks,

Mark Frye
