I agree. Nothing in the NEC that prevents splicing with whatever UL listed
& approved component (wire nut, insulated splice, etc.) is necessary and
doesn't violate bending and fill limits. This is common in Vermont, in both
jurisdictions (state and town inspections, where required).

I've run across overreaching inspectors before, who don't like this or
that until it's pointed out no violation of NEC has occurred.
