Hi Bill and all. Windy was having troubles getting this to post, so he asked that I post it on his behalf:

Bill,

I agree, mostly, with Jay. The Shurflo may last 1-3 years and it is difficult and expensive to rebuild. It's a diaphragm pump like an RV pump and has a brush motor. When the diaphragm wears or breaks, it instantly floods the motor. It's 1980's technology. But it is efficient for low-flow rates.

The Hober items that I see listed on their Alibaba site are "solar pump inverters" designed to power conventional 3-phase AC pumps. Jay explains, but I will cut to the chase … You will need  many more PV watts than you should need, and it will pump MUCH more water than you are calling for. The pump cannot be slowed down to match your needs because that would kill its lift capacity. That is the essential nature of conventional centrifugal pumps.

You should look for a helical rotor (HR) submersible, also called a screw pump. It is not a centrifugal pump. It is positive displacement, like the Shurflo, and will have similar efficiency, excellent for low volume high lift. HOWEVER, it is brushless and long lasting. Instead of a vibrating diaphragm, it has a metal helical rotor, just one moving part.

Lorentz and Grundfos SQ-Flex are the original successful HR submersibles, but oversized and expensive for the low volume that you require.

There are several Chinese companies making HR submersible solar pumps that are smaller, and cheap. Some of them are very good. SunRotor in USA sells good ones and stands by them.*

Happy New Year Wrenches From a young lady who is trying to bring clean water to a village in Uganda:

“ This is Rosanna Bauman from Garnett. I'd talked to you about 2 years ago about solar pumps for our friends in Uganda. We installed the solar panels but are just now getting the money saved up for the well-drilling. We have clean water located 75 meteers below, no rock. Looking at a Shur-flo or a Hober. We can get the Hober shipped direct from China to Uganda DHL, plus it's about $200 less.  However, we would like some advice as to their reliability. We want something reliable.

Have any of your Solar Wrenches used or heard of this company? Looking at using a 3000 liter/day pump to pump 1,000 liters, since it will be directly tied to solar power, no battery back-ups.

You're welcome to call me if you have questions!

Thanks!

          Rosanna Bauman”

Thanks for your thoughts
