Hi Kevin; I agree those dump loads were marginal as far as construction and capacity. I believe the actual manufacturer was Missouri Wind and Sun, the HL-75/100 units still show on video on their site. The riveted connections to the resistor lugs were not good, and backside heat problems as you mention, and serious expansion and contraction issues. Now they just sell the resistors, no enclosure. There is a need for a sturdy and reliable product here. Unfortunately getting a UL listing is so expensive.....but that may not be an issue for you out back of beyond Smithers, I know and love the area! The usual DC replacement water heater elements available everywhere have always worked fine for me. Another need for a product is one that also has a switchable 120VAC capability for shore power. At this time I don't know of any solutions for this situation that don't involve hacking together your own enclosure and air heating elements, and i would suggest a fan, as you are dumping power anyway.
