Bill: The other image is a garden variety landscape flag. Bend a 45 in the lower end and stick it through your pilot hole. Spin it and when the end touches the side of a rafter you will know exactly where the rafter is.
Circle your pilot hole with a lumber crayon so you don't forget to patch it. Hopefully the pilot hole will lie under your flashing. If you do need to go into the attic for blocking, roll up the flag and stick that end through the hole. It will unfurl in the attic making it easy to find your location.
