Chris, that is very clever. If there is access to the rafters, I’ve always
measured down from the ridge to where I want the top l-leg, and angled up from
the edge of the rafter to where I guess the center of the rafter will be. And
then redrill a pilot hole straight down from the top through the exit hole.
Cathedral ceilings are another thing. Welding magnets would be good there to
find drywall screws.

others?

If you have access to the rafters, we clamp two welding magnets to the rafter
with a woodworkers clamp, and run another over the top. The magnets are setup
to repel, so the rafter is the low point between the magnets.

We have tried a number of products. The D-Tect is in amazing stud finder
but did very little on shingle roofs. The mechanism by which you run it
across a surface is clearly not made for shingles. It is basically a
$1000 sculpture on the top shelf in our shop.

I am still not aware of any great method for identifying rafters.
