What I found is a Sunny Island mini-grid system behaving oddly. The
generator, when started with the SI, would run for a few minutes and then
shut down. Further investigation revealed that the SIs were indicating that
the inverters were sending lots of power back to the generator. I don't
know if this was actually the case, nor can I grasp how this could happen.
Fortunately I reached an off-grid tech at SMA that I trust (among the many
at SMA I do not, please don't share this email.) and we were able to resolve
the issue. I am not sure what we did but I suspect that simply rebooting
the Sunny Islands was the cure.

We did little to evaluate the batteries. They did seem to hold rock solid
under loads. I am not convinced, however, that these batteries are right
for off-grid. The internal battery management system will allow them to
disconnect under surge loads, just when you need your batteries to stay
connected. I will be conversing with the manufacturer to learn more about
them.

William,

What did you find at the site? I did not see any attachment or link in your
email so let me know what you are working on. Do you have any questions
about the batteries/system?
