Michael:

You have got to get her onto a Rivendell, somehow.  I had the same 
discussion with my wife.  Her ancient aluminum Trek was just fine, nothing 
wrong with it, why would she want something different, etc, etc.  An 
Atlantis came onto the market & she only agreed to check it out to appease 
me.  She did not want the bike.  After 10 minutes riding around a parking 
lot, she came back & said (in a low whisper so the seller couldn't hear) 
"I've got to have this bike!".  

So that's the strategy.  Tactically, a romantic weekend is San Francisco, 
with a side trip to Walnut Creek could be worth considering.
