No problem friction shifting 9 speeds with Silver shifters set up as either thumbies or as bar-ends. But the easy hand-access makes very fine tuning not something that bothers me. I haven't tried downtube shifters like that, and given the more frequent fine tuning, the shifter location could make a big difference. I say try it, and if it doesn't work out, get some bar end pods later and move the shifters. However, that suggestion doesn't work if you dislike bar ends.
