Michael,

That's not a gumwall tire, it's a skinwall tire. A true gumwall tire has a
layer of rubber covering the sidewalls from bead to bead. The sidewalls
are covered with gum colored rubber without carbon black added, thus the
name. My old Schwinn Varsity had gumwall tires. My Surly has skinwall
tires. From a distance both look similar since the sidewalls are a similar
color.

Skinwall tires are fabric with a strip of rubber tread and some thin skin
of rubber or latex to protect the fabric. Sometimes the sidewalls are tan,
black, dark brown or various other colors.

Somewhere in time we've lost the meaning of bicycle terms Gumwall vs.
skinwall is a good example.
