Actually, that specific mechanism does exist. You do need to be viewing via the web interface.
To the right of the "Reply" arrow (itself to the right of every post) is a small, downward pointing triangle. Clicking on this will bring down a menu of "More Message Actions". Among the choices is "Reply to Author" Note - this works via a compliant browser in a desktop environment. There may be anomalies via iOS.
