The QB can do 8 teeth--the original gearing was 32/40 up front, so the dropout was made to accommodate that.
FYI, my Crosscheck's dropouts can do 6 teeth. I don't know if Surly makes them available aftermarket, though. They used to be available, but I don't see them on the site now.
