OK...I did some yoga, meditation, self affirmation, took a sedative, and dove into this project.
I am pleased as pie to report results were fantastic with only a couple flubs! I decided to go the route of removing the lever body so I could wrap tightly around the clamp by it's self. I snipped a small piece of the yellow Newbaums off the end and used as a cheater wrapping it directly on top of the clamp. Then for added comfort I pre-wrapped from the bar end up to the clamp with some leftover cloth tape of a previous attempt. I wrapped that with about a 50/50 overlap which keeps it smooth. Then I started with the final wrap from the bar end going slow trying to keep the wrap consistent. Going around the clamp was SO much easier than fighting the whole body of the lever even though the old Dia Comps are pretty small. I still had to back up a couple times to get the tape to fall right to the edge of the clamp before going around it. I finished up both sides in short order then twined them off and broke out the shellac feeling pretty chuffed I had aced the job. It wasn't until I knelt down while brushing the underside did I see a small gap I had left near the right clamp. I decided to roll with my zen mood and considered it the imperfection making it perfect. The other head scratcher was the shellac. I usually wrap with tan cork, then add 2 coats of amber and call it done. I figured the yellow base would would be super rich with 2 coats, but it only looked a little darker? I decided to do a third coat with a different can I stumbled on in the garage and it made a BIG difference....huh? It was then I realized I had been using clear first go round. Didnt even know I had clear. Anyway, feeling decadent at 3 coats I went full ostentatious and added another. Very happy with the results! Now if my bike would return from paint.....week 12.....sigh.
