IIRC, Grant had an article in a long ago RR about taping bars. I use a separate 3" strip around each lever and behind the bar -- hold it on with a spot of glue or something -- and then wind tape around the lever body from the bottom -- and hope that the roll is long enough. But I rarely use cloth tape.
