Apparently the Vangal was a re-branded French import brought in by a couple of Americans, with last names Van... and ...gal, back in the '70s; his was the top o' line model ("Champion"?) and I have to say that the lug thinning and brazing detail looked as good to cursory eyes as that on my Curt-built custom Riv. And he had polished up very nicely the Stronglight 99 and various odd bits with which he had built it up. Very pretty. Riv-ish content: he was riding no-retention.
(I am always impressed and a bit amused by how shiny many people keep their bikes. It certainly makes them look good! Mine are well maintained, but not often washed.) The owner has a website and gave me his card, and I'll try to track down a photo and post it -- he is Bob Hanson from the CR list, btw. We met halfway on one of ABQ's many bike trails to swap an orphan 99 left arm for a ditto Pro 5 Vis ditto. The Vangal (Champion model?) is certainly Rivish, if not Rivendellian. (Or is that vice-versa?). The very early '80s "commercially pure", standard-tubing-widthed, titanium Sumitomo is said to have very, very pretty tigg'ing -- even the crown to steerer transition, he said, is so perfect that you can't see the joint. I'll try to post that one, too. On Sun, Jun 23, 2013 at 8:02 AM, Ron Mc <bulldog...@gmail.com> wrote: > triple the humidity and ride with us in S.
