Couple years ago i pulled the outer ring off my XD2 triple and put on a guard, leaving the 36-24 middle and inner rings as-is. The 36 was plenty high for me with 11 cog on 8spd cassette, and I could get to all the combos. New Hillborne runs guarded 40-26 with 12-34 8spd, and that's great, too (I do like the 40-26/12-34 better, though). I learned that a slightly longer bottom bracket can improve reliability of front shifts to low gear by moving it farther from the innermost spring travel position of the front derailer. With no third ring hanging out there to be concerned about reaching with the derailer, you can afford it now. Ben
