Jay, Don't get me wrong. Most of my bikes have come to me used or set up a certain way and I'm too cheap/lazy to change out the cranks. A 45 middle is a bit high but it's on garage find trek that came to me with a half step plus granny set up and I'm just dealing with it for now. If I were going from scratch, the 40/26 would be perfect on that bike. Where I ride, I have some very steep hills where I need the small ring but the hills are fairly short (usually from a few hundred feet to a mile or so). That explains why I'm in the middle 90% of the time. That and the fact that I'm a lightweight and rarely carry much on the bike. Certainly for a mountainous climb with a loaded bike I'd use the small ring a lot more.
