I have an SS Large on my main rig, but I have never lashed it down, it just rides freely on top of the rack. I use a Nitto QR with it, so it's really easy to take off if I want to. The only reason you need the rack there is for a little extra support for the bag. The bag doesn't sway at all as long as the rack is supporting it from beneath. Heavily loaded or empty, it's fine. I also lay my bike down a lot when stopped, sometimes fully loaded, since it doesn't have a kickstand. No problems with the bag, it meets the ground about the same time as the handlebars.
