What is all of that green stuff covering the ground?

[Wonderful photos. They remind me of the old 20th Century Fox Motion
Picture Ranch in the hills just north of Malibu where I worked as a night
patrolman back in the mid '70s, home to film sets for M*A*S*H, Tora! Tora!
Tora! and Swiss Fambly Robinson. Live oaks, brush covered hills, dirt roads
... My job was to drive patrols over ~8 miles of dirt road and doubletrack
to (1) keep out vandals who might climb over the fence and (2) chase the
resident cows away from the Swiss Fambly Robinson set's potted exotic
fauna. I slept many a night in Hawkeye's tent. We were told not to exceed
12 mph, at which a complete patrol would take 45 minutes. I came close to
hitting 15 minutes, hitting 70+ on some of the wider straights at 2 am --
we'd destroy the cars after a few weeks of this treatment -- old junkers
from the 20th Century lot. Great fun. Beside getting paid, I aced our
science and math tutorials with all the dead time in which to study --
Thomas Aquinas College was just across the street (= Malibu Canyon Road) at
the time. The ranch supervisor had a very nice house and I remember
thinking them very decadent -- after all I was attending a conservative
Catholic Great Books college across the way -- as the son, just a couple of
years older than I, would bring in his nocturnal girlfriends for a night of
ranch touring in his El Camino combined with pot smoking and, no doubt,
fornincation. And the super's house has naked lady posters on the wall of
the billiard room!

Great fun.
