I like to know what's in a product before I spray it into the air I'm
breathing. That said the search for a good, non toxic, environmentally
safe degreaser is unending. Bon Ami (completely safe, friendly and
efficient) works for me but it's not too convenient for chains. For that I
usually go outside and drop the chain into a small amount of paint thinner,
cover and shake it; then take it out and clean it with a tooth brush. I
let the dirt settle to the bottom of the container and then decant it to a
new (yogurt) container. About 3-4 ozs of cleaner gets me through a season.
A while back GP suggested using a plastic soda or water bottle and a small
amount of degreaser. I think that would work well, but have never actually
tried it since I don't typically buy soda or water.
